After a successful month of potty training, Brandi Benner took her 2-year-old daughter to Target to pick out a toy as a reward.
Benner’s daughter, Sophia, picked out a doctor doll and was super exited about her purchase. Sophia focused on the fact that she was a doctor and nothing else.
“She kept going back to the doctor doll, because in her mind, she is already a doctor,” Benner said to ABC News. “She loves giving checkups, and if you come in the house, she’ll tell you that’s the first thing you need.”
However, when Benner went to check out the doll with her daughter, the cashier questioned Sophia’s choice due to the skin color of the doll.
“Are you sure this is the doll you want, honey?” the cashier asked, according to Benner, who shared the story on Facebook.
Sophia was set on purchasing that doll and immediately answered back with a positive response.
“Yes please!” she said.
However, the cashier still was not convinced that it was the right doll for her.
“But she doesn’t look like you. We have lots of other dolls that look more like you,” the cashier told Sophia.
Without thinking twice, Sophia responded to the cashier with a answer wise beyond her years.
“Yes, she does. She’s a doctor like I’m a doctor,” Sophia said. “And I’m a pretty girl and she’s a pretty girl. See her pretty hair? And see her stethoscope?”
The cashier then dropped the subject and simply answered, “Oh, that’s nice.”
“This experience just confirmed my belief that we aren’t born with the idea that color matters. Skin comes in different colors just like hair and eyes and every shade is beautiful,” Benner wrote on Facebook.
Benner’s post quickly went viral with over 219,000 shares and 590,000 likes.
“I’m just completely blown away by how much people have been touched by loving everyone,” Benner told Today. “I’m just so touched that people are so supportive of my daughter and her love of people.”
