Blind Singer Rocks a Powerful Performance of the National Anthem on First Night of Republican National Convention

The Republican National Convention has already brought its fair share of drama, but one moment from Monday night’s convention deserves a little more of the spotlight.

Meet Marlana VanHoose, the singer of the national anthem on the first night of the convention. VanHoose, 20, was born blind due to cytomegalovirus, a disease that effects the development of the option nerve. On top of being blind, VanHoose was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was 2 years old.

VanHoose’s performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” brought the audience to their feet for a well deserved standing ovation.

This isn’t the first time VanHoose has performed on a national stage. The singer has performed the national anthem at a bunch of sporting events, including a Monday Night Football game last November during a Cleveland Browns home game.

VanHoose hopes she can inspire others.

“I just want people to never give up on their dreams, focus on Jesus and be inspired,” she told Today.
