Love cannot always be measured in material worth. Just ask Ariel Desiree McRae, a woman from Tennessee who is getting a lot of buzz surrounding her wedding rings.
After McRae shared a picture of her wedding rings on Facebook, it quickly went viral due to the size of the rings. The rings are quite the opposite of the typical engagement rings and are very simple in nature.
“My husband doesn’t have a lot, neither of us do,” McRae said to Atlantic television station WAGA. “We scrape and scrape to pay bills and put food in our bellies.”
For McRae, jewelry was never a priority when getting married. However, her husband wanted to go the traditional route and together they went to purchase some simple rings to mark the occasion.
The couple pulled together enough money and bought matching sterling silver rings.
“That’s what sits on my ring finger, and I am so in love with them,” McRae said.
While many people across the internet are praising McRae and her humble choice, not everyone agrees with her decision. As the couple was purchasing their modest rings, a lady in the store made an offensive remark that McRae didn’t approve of.
“She said, ‘Y’all, can you believe that some men get these as engagement rings? How pathetic.'”
While the nasty comment seemed to get to McRae’s husband, she didn’t let it bother her.
“It isn’t the ring that matters, it is the love that goes into buying one that is,” McRae said to the woman as they purchased the rings and left the store.
McRae and her husband also kept their wedding ceremony simple by eloping at the local courthouse.
In McRae’s viral post, she explained that her ring doesn’t make a difference about the love for her husband.
“I would have gotten married to this man if it has been a 25-cent gum ball machine ring,” she wrote. “When did our nation fall so far to think the only way a man can truly love a woman is if he buys her $3,000+ jewelry and makes a public decree of his affection with said flashy ring? Sure they are nice, sure the sentiment is wonderful and I’m not trying to cut down any of your experiences, but when did it come to all that? Why do material possessions equate love??”
For McRae, it was never about the ring and just about the love.
“But here I am though, Court-House married, $130 ring set, the love of my life by my side and happier than I could ever imagine,” she wrote.
As of Friday, her Facebook post received over 45,000 shares.
