An Italian chef is finding a clever way to keep children calm while dining in his restaurant.
Antonio Ferrari, owner of the eponymous wine bar in Padua, Italy, will give a five percent discount to families with well-behaved children at the restaurant. It is a trick he picked up on during a visit to Miami with some friends.
Ferrari noticed the discount at the end of the meal and liked the idea so much that he brought it back to Italy.
However, the discount is not always easy to come by.
“When you get parents who are rude, the kids think they can do anything. They might climb on the tables with their shoes on, play in the bathroom and make a mess with the taps, or annoy the other customers,” Ferrari told The Local.
Recently, a large party mixed with both adults and kids earned Ferrari’s approval for the discount.
“I imagine how difficult parenting is today,” Ferrari told Corriere della Sera. “I acted instinctively, it was amazing to see how they interacted with each other in that table, with such composure. The parents were more or less my age, they were in their 40s, while the children were aged between 4 and 6.”
He continued, “I didn’t know them well to congratulate them, it was their first time in my restaurant, so I opted for the discount.”
Ferrari posted a picture of the receipt on Facebook with the caption, “It’s just so unusual!”
The family was very excited about the discount and left a very generous 30-euro tip.
While the discount is a nice touch, Ferrari explained that it might not be permanent.
“I’d definitely offer the discount again, but I don’t want to make it an official promotion or offer because that’s not the point,” Antonio Ferrari told The Local.
Hopefully, other restaurants will see this generous good deed and follow suit!
