Thanks to an organization called Make Love Not Scars, Reshma Bano Qureshi was given the opportunity of a lifetime.
The 19-year-old acid attack survivor was given the chance to walk the runway during New York Fashion Week as a model in the FTL Moda show. It was a one-of-a-kind experience for Qureshi who had never left her home country of India.
Qureshi, who modeled clothing by Indian designer Archanna Kochhar, hopes her contribution to NYFW will help to redefine what it means to be a model. The new model also hopes to spread awareness about acid attacks going on in India with the intent to end them once and for all.
Qureshi was attacked with acid by her estranged brother-in-law and two other men about two years ago. From the attack she lost her eye and suffered many facial burns.
“No one else understands what an acid attack is except the survivors themselves. I do not want this to happen to anyone else,” Qureshi shared with Reuters with the help of a translator.
Qureshi has previously spoken out about acid attacks with a video on YouTube that has been viewed over 1.8 million times. Check it out below.
Quereshi had an amazing time being a model in the show.
“I couldn’t believe it was happening to me,” Quereshi shared. “In that moment I felt extremely happy.”
