We’re not sure how anybody could do this. After a dog was left behind in a move, one man stepped up to the plate to make sure the pooch would be okay.
Dustin Oliver first found out about the abandoned dog from a local tip. Oliver works at Detroit Youth & Dog Rescue, which helps mentor young people and rescue a bunch of dogs. According to a neighbor, the owners of the house came back to pick up some of their personal belongings, but left the dog, who Oliver named Boo, behind.
“They left behind what they didn’t want, including Boo,” Oliver shared with BuzzFeed News.
Boo wasn’t a super friendly dog and didn’t let Oliver get very close. Oliver took his time to get to know the dog, eventually breaking through to Boo.
“I think he was unsure of humans,” he explained. “I think he was waiting for his family to come back and get him.”
The next day Oliver came back with some food for Boo. He fed the dog two sausage McMuffins and two hash browns, which Boo quickly ate.
The food allowed Boo to open up a little more and eventually Oliver was able to get Boo on a leash. The pair then sat around talking until he was ready to get checked out at the vet.
“We just had a conversation, me and Boo. I told him how this is going to go, how he’ll never be hurt again,” Oliver said.
While Oliver was gaining the trust of Boo, his picture went viral around the internet. Many people were offering to adopt the K9 and sent in donations to help him out. Thankfully, the donations came in handy as the vet found stage-two heartworm in Boo.
When Boo returned from the vet, he was excited to see Oliver. He ran to him for a hug, proving that all of Oliver’s patience paid off.
“He’s had a great transformation. He is a traditional American pit bull terrier that it very trusting, loving, forgiving, and slightly coming out of his shell,” he said. “I’m just showing him the love, attention, and care I put into all my dogs.”
According to BuzzFeed News, “Boo will live with a foster family while he’s being treated for heartworm. Once he’s better, Detroit Youth & Dog Rescue will find him a local forever home.”
“If you put your heart and soul into something, it’ll come back to you,” Oliver shared about his new relationship with Boo.
