There have been many debates over what constitutes true love, but we can all agree that all the little things we do for one another can have a great effect on a relationship. Jimmy Breland, husband of Billie, knew this firsthand. He was used to his wife’s habit of leaving little notes in her checkbook and around the house, little reminders for herself. It was a habit that had become part of her personality.
The Brelands’, a beloved couple in their community from Mississippi, were married in 1954. Then, in the holiday season of 2015, Billie passed away. A love so long nurtured isn’t easy to get over, and after being together for 60 years, Breland was faced with the daunting task of saying goodbye. Two days after her passing, he found help in a familiar place.
Jimmy found a new note tucked away in his late wife’s checkbook. At first, he thought it was just one of many, one that she did not get around to reminding herself of. But, it turned out to be so much more. The letter read as follows:
“Please don’t cry because I died! Smile because I lived! Know that I’m in a happy place! Know that we will meet again! I’ll see you there!”
The note was posted on the Brelands’ grandson Cliff’s Facebook, where it has received thousands of likes and shares.
Let’s be grateful that stories of true love such as this one are still around to experience.
