Most parents take on the duty of dressing their children once school picture day comes around. This becomes truer the younger the child is, at the risk of he or she going to school dressed as their favorite cartoon character or something. But three-year-old Kaylieann Steinbach, after rejecting the outfit options presented to her by her parents, decided to do things a little differently this year.
Channeling her inner Kara Zor-El, Steinback dressed up as Superman’s famous cousin, Supergirl. Suffice it to say, her parents approved – even allowing her to bring Kara’s cousin Kal-El along for the picture:
It turned out to be an awesome picture, with Steinbach smirking as if to say “Dude, I can’t believe they let me wear this!”
Steinbach, who suffers from hearing loss, refers to her heroes as “Pootergirl” and “Pooterman,” due to her not being able to hear the letter “S.” Once the little girl had rejected the original outfits and chosen Supergirl, her father Austin Steinbach told the Huffington Post, “She walked up, looked over each of her choices, turned and said ‘Pootergirl!’” And well, I couldn’t argue with that answer.”
Steinbach, who often wears different comic book-inspired costumes, might owe her love of superheroes to her father, who lets her cosplay and recently took her to San Francisco Comic-Con, where she was dressed as Spider-Man. According to him, his daughter has not yet decided whether she wants to be Spider-Man, Supergirl, or the Incredible Hulk for Halloween.
Steinbach posted the school picture on Tuesday to Reddit with the caption, “My daughter got to pick what she wore for her school picture. Daddy approves,” and it has since received hundreds of comments, including many positive messages from the deaf community:
“The reaction and turnout from the deaf community is amazing. I still haven’t been able to get through all the messages of support and kind words people have sent me. I could never have imagined how much her picture could have touched so many.”
One comment, in particular, stuck out: User bak3donh1gh suggested, “When she gets married you should photoshop the husbands face onto superman.”
Sounds like a logical next step to me.
